The workers would construct the structure during the day and it was razed down at night by the noblemen so that there was enough work for everyone to earn a living the next day.
Asaf-ud-Daula, Nawab of Lucknow, in 1784 built Bara Imambara, it took 14 years to complete this complex structure. Not only the structure of this monument surprises people but also what surprises them the most is Bhool Bhulaiya. These hollow walls, ceilings and domes of various heights were built to support the Imambara. Even today if you go there as a tourist you will be lost so either get a guide or follow the folk who have a guide. The bhool-bhulaiya’s famous funny rant goes something like this - “Chaar raaste bhoot. Ek rasta sach, teen raste bhool-bhulaiya.” But if you guess the wrong door, he lets you climb those stairs while he waits down and you realize that it takes you further down instead of going up. This place will surprise you an every turn. If someone lit a matchstick inside Bhool Bhulaiya it could be heard 50 meters away so the famous saying “ Walls have ears” came from this monument. It is a maze of over 1,000 corridors and 489 identical doors. This is a fully ventilated structure and it even has a tunnel which leads to Delhi and other areas of Agra.
The Baoli(well) proves to be the only source of water due to its connection to underground steam water. Many of the emperor's visitors praised the building's magnificent design, which had the rarest English marble finish, miniature hot and cold water fountains, rectangular niches, and elegant pillars in the room corners. The splendor of Shahi Baoli has almost disappeared by the present. It consists of a five-story building made up of interconnecting archways and galleries and an entrance with an arch. The deep well is accessible via the open staircase. For good luck, visitors are encouraged to toss a coin into the lake.
To cut a long story short: Bara Imambara has marvelous architecture. You'll be fascinated by the monument's attractiveness and rich history. Therefore, anytime you arrange a vacation to Lucknow, be sure to put Bara Imambara on your schedule.
