There have been several perspectives and points of view about the identification of this man and woman. They were previously identified as Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife, Giovanna Cenami, the daughter of an Italian banker. Arnolfini was a Bruges-based Italian trader. As a result, the painting was dubbed "the Arnolfini marriage" until it was determined that they were both married before 1434 (the date mentioned in the painting).

The couple's clothing in the portrait served as a demonstrative display of their wealth and social status. Fur, a luxury limited to the upper section of society, showcased their affluence, especially considering the warm day implied by the blooming tree outside the window. The choice of colors in their garments and bed hangings, such as red, black, green, and blue, further emphasized their opulence, as these dyes were extravagantly expensive. The extensive use of fabric, with intricate pleating, folds, and tucks, also indicated their wealth, as these details required more cloth and thus cost more.

Jan van Eyck paid close attention to tiny, beautiful details, like matching gold and silver cuffs, detailed edges on the woman's veil, and a few highly expensive oranges nearby. These elements not only showcased the artist's skill but also highlighted the couple's education and knowledge in using their wealth to present themselves favorably.

There comes another interpretation which signifies the gender roles of men and women during that time. According to Margaret Carroll, an art historian and professor, the portrait potentially symbolizes a husband delegating control of his business affairs to his wife while he is away. Men who traveled for business or other purposes would entrust the management of their business matters to their wives through a formal legal agreement or document.

In addition to the mirror, various other symbolic elements can be found in the painting. The lit candle in the chandelier signifies the presence of God and witnesses to the sacredness of the marriage bond. Furthermore, the dog at the couple's feet symbolizes fidelity and loyalty, while the oranges on the windowsill represent wealth and fertility.

The Arnolfini Portrait is remarkable not only for its technical brilliance but also for its psychological depth. The intense gaze exchanged between Giovanni and Giovanna suggests a sense of intimacy and affection between the couple, making the painting not merely a formal documentation of their marriage but also a poignant portrayal of their emotional connection.

Viewers of this painting often speculate about the woman's pregnancy, as her rounded belly and other exquisite hints seem to suggest that she might be carrying a child. However, there is an alternative perspective according to which she might simply be lifting her dress to showcase the luxurious fabric's fold. The following point will shed further light on this speculation.

Conclusion

As we've explored this fascinating artwork, we've seen how it's not just about looks but also about the deeper meanings and stories behind it. Van Eyck's attention to detail and his ability to capture the essence of the time are truly impressive. And that ambiguity about the pregnancy? Well, it keeps us guessing and sparks our imaginations, right?
