Role of Lighting Designers in Production

A lighting designer is a critical part of the production team who works with a diverse team of professionals to execute the vision of the director and provide both artistic and technical expertise. As a lighting designer one needs to thoroughly understand the variety of effects they can create with the intensity and direction of light. These specific effects can, in turn, produce a range of results that highlight different elements on stage.

The director and the artistic director also coordinate with the lighting designer to determine the results they want to produce. It could be to steer the audience’s attention toward a particular scene of characters, to create lighting-related visual effects, to highlight certain objects, and so on.

Responsibilities of a Lighting Designer

The responsibilities of a lighting designer vary depending on the type of team and the nature of production. Hence, it becomes difficult to pinpoint particular responsibilities of a lighting designer as they work with a team of creative professionals and their work involves working together with them to ensure the effectiveness of the production.

Some duties, however, remain consistent regardless of these variables as these are distinct responsibilities of Lighting Designers:

Understanding:

Firstly, lighting designers need to understand the nature of the production process and the goal and vision of the director and artistic director. Only then can we begin to create a  comprehensive plan to ensure that the attention of the audience remains wherever the director wants.

Creating:

Then, they need to create design plans to get the desired effects. They would need to write an elaborate lighting plot to help the actors understand the lighting changes and their sequence of execution.

Strategizing:

Lighting designers also need to ensure that the types of equipment and tools required to achieve the results don’t exceed the production budget. The energy usage should be carefully monitored here. This strategizing process would continue until the lighting designer has made final checks during the rehearsals and made all the required changes.

Overseeing:

Finally, the main task of the lighter designer is to oversee the lighting as the production runs.

Managing:

Although this isn’t common in small productions, larger productions typically require the lighting designer to manage a team of lighting designers while coordinating with the other teams.
