'The Hallyu Wave' effect

South Korea has often been heralded as one of the ‘top fashion trends’ churning countries. The SK government has very cleverly exercised their soft power. Bringing attention to their country using their culture, music and entertainment industry has been a political agenda, which is now being called as the “Hallyu Wave”.  The South Korean government invests heavily in fashion, another intriguing fact is that the government financially supports the ‘Seoul Fashion Week’ and the ‘Korean Fashion Designing Contest’, which allows a number of up-and-coming designers to showcase their collection alongside bigger labels, designers and brands. Korean fashion is not about bringing the runway to the streets but rather the opposite. The street style fashion has wormed its way through international barriers to the point of extreme visibility. A few of the latest trends that have become a staple in wardrobes around the world are:

1)      Fleece jackets and sweaters.

Made of the finest polyester fibres, this synthetic material resembles the fur coat of a sheep. The artificial material makes it lightweight, easy to carry and durable. The versatile fabric is available in a plethora of colours that can be paired with almost any other apparel pieces. The warm and furry piece feels like a warm embrace and is donned by almost all age groups. Apart from being stylish, comfortable and in trend, they are also extremely cost effective.

2)      Modern Hanbok

The traditional attire of Korea from way back 3 BCE, originated from the Goryeo Dynasty, consists of a wide-bottomed skirt (chima) and a top (jeogori) for the females, pants (baji) and shirt (jeogori) for the males. The traditional Hanbok has evolved further and is being worn by the younger generations, though it is not exactly what it used to be. The modern twist gives it a more colourful and shorter variant of the original Hanbok.

The influence of Korean fashion and culture on a global scale has become clearly evident. Bucket hats, loose baggy tees, wide legged high waist denims, chunky sneakers, combat boots, minimalistic approach to clothes are a few of the other Hallyu trends that have taken the world by storm. K-Pop and K-Drama ignited the Hallyu wave and now the baton has been passed on to K-Fashion to keep the embers burning.
